MaDear’s Strength (2025) 13″x30″ Carved and curated Ebony Wood and Leather Pyrography portrait suspended on an telescoping tripod stand for multilevel display.

About The Piece:
The image is a powerful representation from my series: “Just A Crown: 40 Crowns worn by Black Women During Their Lifetime.” “Madear’s Crown” portrays an elder standing tall and proud in her quintessential house coat, shoulders squared against the world. MaDear’s essence radiates through three striking elements: her arms reveal a fearless strength forged by years of hard work and resilience, embodying the unwavering discipline she imparts. The other arm, relaxed in repose, conveys her nurturing spirit, overflowing with love and guidance. Above her shoulders, a horizon unfolds, symbolizing the rich tapestry of her path—interwoven with the history and legacy of the MaDear’s who came before her. Each crown in this series manifests the strength and reverence deeply embedded in community and family. MaDear’s crown is cultivated through generations, reflecting the profound worth, dreams, fears, faith, and sacrifices vital to preserving our Culture. Within this crown lies an unwavering structure, illuminating her wisdom with focused and poignant clarity.

The Ebony Wood hanger is a regal atonement offered to address those who come to Madear lacking regard. The curated wood is a reminder of something aged, as rings in the tree indicate the years of its’ existence. The ebony heartwood is a declaration of Culture and an announcement to prepare yourself
