Jas MardisArt

Jas Mardis’ 20-plus year background in broadcast radio and journalism informs his poetry/storytelling/oration, allowing him to create immersive visual installations. Mardis identifies as a "Cultural Artist" with a mission to promote Black Humanity. By embedding narrative text into permanent materials like quilting, leather and assemblage, he ensures that stories of the African Diaspora cannot be easily erased or forgotten. Mardis elevates "practical" folk crafts—like quilting and leatherwork passed down by elders—to the status of high gallery art, bridging the gap between community heritage and formal institutions. His work acts as a "documentary for the living," using art to address contemporary social issues like racial violence while celebrating cultural symbols like the "Just A Crown" series
