Where From Here (2022) 36″x45″ Fabric Art and Leather Pyrography

About The Piece:
“Where From Here” ,  36″x45″ Traditional Strip Quilt Design featuring an original hand drawn portrait on leather using pyrography technique and an original pine hanger with road map carving and copper heads indicating energy of the Earth. This piece takes the traditional strip quilting art form that uses every scrap of used material in creating the form, one strip at a time and expounds on how quilting feeds the imagination and creates the hope for more within the youthful heart that lays beneath it. The girl featured in the drawn image is feeling the spiritual and ancestral effect hidden in the DNA of those who wore the clothing that made the quilt. My decision to draw the image on leather with a heated iron was to create the idea of permanence in the materials of traditional African American reuse practices. An additional element in the frame is that the starting hole and the final hole are not filled with the copper fillers. That absence indicate the idea of Tabula Rasa or blank slate in her life. Her birth is a blank slate path presented by the sacrifice and building of her elders. The final hole represents her decision to “Go From here” into the land or to stay on the land and continue the building up of what will be the Homestead, either way presents a blank slate for her. She will rewrite the homestead’s ways and direction with the knowledge of her decision.
